ETHAN

The three of us ended up in my hotel room.

Alejandra had insisted that, eavesdropping operation or not, she needed a stiff drink after everything the day had hit her with. Fortunately, there was a bar in the lobby of the hotel Holm and I had booked. It was a small luxury we didn’t usually have at the budget accommodations we typically stayed in for missions, and I felt grateful we’d booked everything in a rush.

We’d elected to bring our drinks up to the room so we’d be able to talk freely about the case. The room itself was also a little nicer than the places we usually stayed, complete with a small couch, a writing desk, and a large window that overlooked the city. Alejandra took the couch, and I sat on the edge of the bed, while Holm dragged the desk chair over to us. As we sipped our drinks, we discussed everything that had happened and what we thought about the bus driver.

“This means that he’s violent,” Alejandra murmured in reference to the kidnapper. She looked at me and then at Holm before taking a swig of her drink. “He didn’t hesitate to shoot the bus driver. Not only that, he left him for dead.” She shook her head. “That’s who has the children right now.”

“But why?” Holm groaned, slurring the last word slightly. We hadn’t had much to eat that day, and it seemed like the drink he’d ordered was hitting him hard. “I just don’t get it. This was definitely planned. We know that because Mrs. Alvarez saw that weirdo lurking around the school, and now the bus driver says that the car was parked in the middle of the road in such a way that made it impossible to ignore. So this was definitely planned ahead of time.” He ran a hand through his hair. “But why?”

“Wait,” I murmured as something he said stuck out to me. “The car.” I turned to Alejandra. “The bus driver said that he stopped because a car was stalled in the middle of the road. Maybe we can use that. Because if he took off with the bus, then he would have had to leave the car behind.”

“You’re right,” Alejandra replied, her eyes widening as she realized what I was getting at. “You’re completely right. Someone would have noticed it and reported it to the police if it was blocking the road.”

“We can look into reports of abandoned vehicles,” I suggested as I jumped to my feet. “Maybe, if we can determine who the car belongs to, we’ll be able to find our perp.”

“Tomorrow,” Alejandra insisted as she placed a hand on my knee and motioned for me to sit back down. “Ethan, it’s past midnight, and we’ve all been drinking. Tomorrow, I promise I will look into that first thing.”

“Right,” I replied a bit sheepishly.

I had gotten so ahead of myself in my excitement at potentially having a new lead that I’d forgotten the time. Holm was well on his way to being tipsy as well.
